Description
PEPAR2TYP is a variable that indicates whether the respondent's second parent is a biological, step, or adoptive parent. Information about the first parent is in PEPAR1TYP. The second parent is always the father when the father is present and will be female when parents are same sex. The first parent's line number is reported in PELNPAR1 and the second parent's line number is reported in PELNPAR2. These variables are based on CPS respondent reports.
In the 2020 CPS, the family relationship variables were revamped to improve measurement of same sex families and nontraditional family structures. As part of this restructuring, PEPAR1TYP and PEPAR2TYP now refer to parent 1 and parent 2.
PEPAR2TYP was drawn from the final CPS interview, conducted 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. Parent type was not collected at the time of the ATUS interview.
Comparability
This variable is consistent in all years for which it is available. This variable is available beginning with the 2020 CPS (see YEAR_CPS8).
