Description

WHO_ASK reports whether the respondent was asked who they were with for a given activity. With whom information is not asked for certain activities (see ACTIVITY), including sleeping (0101xx), grooming (0102xx), personal activities (0104xx), "respondent refused to answer" (500105), and "respondent didn't remember" (500106).

There have been two changes to the set of activities that are eligible to have information about who the respondent was with during the activity. Starting in 2006, respondents in high school were not asked who they were with when they were taking class (060101). Starting in 2010, respondents were also asked who they were with when they were working (0501xx).

This variable is available via extracts that are hierarchical or rectangular (activity) (more info on extract formats). If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, WHO_ASK will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.

Comparability

Beginning in 2006, respondents who were enrolled in high school were not asked who they were with when they were taking class (ACTIVITY=60101).

Beginning in 2010, respondents were asked who they were with when they were working (ACTIVITY=0501xx).
