WHO_ASK reports whether the respondent was asked who they were with for a given activity. With whom information is not asked for certain activities, including sleeping (0101xx), grooming (0102xx), personal activities (0104xx), work (0501xx), "respondent refused to answer" (500105), and "respondent didn't remember" (500106).

WHO_ASK is available only if you select a hierarchical extract. If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, WHO_ASK will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.
