Weekly earnings (EARNWEEK) are reported at the time of the final CPS interview, 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. Spouse's earnings are not updated at the time of the ATUS interview, though spouse's employment status (SPEMPNOT) is. Therefore, respondents whose spouse or unmarried partner was not in the household at the time of the CPS interview have a value of 99999.98 for SPEARNWEEK because information on spouse's earnings is not available.

Except for the effects of inflation, this variable is fully comparable across years.
