RELATEW reports the relationship of the individual with the respondent while the activity was performed to the respondent.

RELATEW is available only if you select a hierarchical extract. If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, RELATEW will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.

Beginning in 2010, there were two changes to RELATEW. First, ATUS respondents were able to provide more detail about their co-workers, colleagues, and clients. This category was broken out into four new categories in 2010: 1) boss or manager, 2) people whom I supervise, 3) co-workers, and 4) customers. Second, respondents were able to report who they were with while they were at work (ACTIVITY codes 050101-050199). To facilitate generating comparable estimates over time, we have assigned the four new categories code 404 only when these types of people accompany respondents during work activities (ACTIVITY codes 050101-050199). Time spent at work with others (ACTIVITY codes 050101-050199) should be excluded from estimates of total time with others for comparability purposes.

Users who want to analyze time spent doing non-work activities with boss/manager, supervisees, co-workers, or customers should use RELATEWU, which preserves all of the detail in the original data.
