IND2_OJ_CPS8

Description

IND2_OJ_CPS8 reports the type of industry in which the person performed his or her secondary occupation, if the respondent has multiple jobs. "Industry" refers to the work setting and economic sector, while "occupation" relates to the worker's specific technical function.

This variable provides the same information as IND_OJ_CPS8, which provides the four-digit Census industry codes. For the convenience of researchers who do not need the level of detail available in IND_OJ_CPS8, IND2_OJ_CPS8 collapses all industries in the four-digit classification scheme into 52 broader industries. In addition, researchers who prefer even less detail may use the first two digits of IND2_OJ_CPS8 to create an industry variable with only 22 categories.

IND2_OJ_CPS8 was collected at the time of the final CPS interview, 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. Industry information for the respondent's main job was collected at the time of the ATUS interview. See IND2 (and IND). However, industry information for the second job was not collected during the ATUS interview.

Comparability

This variable is fully comparable across years. However, IND2_OJ_CPS8 and IND2_CPS8 include a category for the armed forces, but the ATUS interview variable for industry of main job, IND2, does not.
