IND2

Description

IND2 reports the type of industry in which the person performed his or her primary occupation. "Industry" refers to the work setting and economic sector, while "occupation" relates to the worker's specific technical function.

This variable provides the same information as IND, which provides the four-digit Census industry codes. For the convenience of researchers who do not need the level of detail available in IND, IND2 collapses all industries in the four-digit classification scheme into 52 broader industries. In addition, researchers who prefer even less detail may use the first two digits of IND2 to create an industry variable with only 21 categories.

IND2 was collected at the time of the ATUS interview, 2-5 months after the final CPS interview. Industry information for the respondent's main job was also collected at the time of the final CPS interview. See IND2_CPS8 (and IND_CPS8). If a respondent has a second job, IND2_OJ_CPS8 reports the industry information for that job at the time of the final CPS interview using the same industry categories as IND2_CPS8. The industry of the respondent's second job was not collected at the time of the ATUS interview.

Comparability

This variable is fully comparable across years. Its CPS parallel, IND2_CPS8, includes a category for the armed forces whereas this one does not.
