HH_CHILD reports whether there is a child under the age of 18 living in the household.

There are a number of other household composition variables that may be useful. HH_OWNCHILD reports whether the respondent has an own child under the age of 18 living in the household. HH_NUMKIDS reports the total number of children in the household, and HH_NUMOWNKIDS reports the total number of the respondent's own children in the household. Also, HH_SIZE reports the total number of people living in the household.

HH_CHILD was collected at the time of the ATUS interview. Information on the presence of children in the household was also collected at the time of the final CPS interview, 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. See HH_CHILD_CPS8.
