DURATION_EXT reports the duration of the activity in minutes. It is the same as DURATION, which truncates the final activity at 4:00 a.m., except for the last activity reported. The last activity of the diary day is not truncated at 4:00 a.m. As a result, the diary day may be longer than 24 hours.

DURATION_EXT is available only if you select a hierarchical extract. If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, DURATION_EXT will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.
